Literature as Witness [Litteratur som vittne]


Cultural memory studies have opened up for new perspectives on traditional disciplines and
topics; by using the concept memory on culture a wide range of approaches can be explored.
In this thesis [below] the cultural memory of the 1930th is examined, as it appears in the representation of the Nazi seizure of power by two writers: Pär Lagerkvist in his book The Hangman and Fredrik Böök in his book An Eyewitness in Germany. Both Lagerkvist and Böök were in Germany the spring 1933 and witnessed the turn-over.
